Move Past Your Comfort Zone And Eliminate The Fear Of Driving
Believe it or not, driving is a mental game. People who have a fear of driving have it in their head that something bad will happen to them. While some may have been in a car accident thus producing these thoughts, others simply are uncomfortable in specific situations. If you want to eliminate this fear of yours, you have to learn to move past your comfort zone.
Driving is all about living in a comfort zone. There are people who have a fear of driving freeways while others fear driving into an unfamiliar area and getting lost. Although it takes a great amount of courage, the key to getting rid of this fear is stepping out of your comfort zone and challenging yourself.
This zone of comfort you have created in your head consists of an area where you feel safe and know nothing bad will happen. How this fear outside of the zone developed can be difficult to determine. But for the purpose of this article, we are more concerned with eliminating the fear. You want to get rid of the anxiety, sweating, rapid heart-beating, and nervousness so that you can get around with no problems.
As mentioned, the key is to face your fears head-on. The problem is many develop a pattern that they are used to. As soon as they step out of this boundary their heart begins to beat faster and scary thoughts develop in the head. Have you ever passed your exit when out of town and begun to worry? What about taking a different route to work on accident and worrying about getting lost?
What people do not realize is this “comfort zone” or fear of driving is all developed inside of your head. There is nothing to worry about when you miss an exit or go further out of town than you are used to. The worst thing that can happen is you get lost and have to pull over to ask for directions.
Other fears that may be stirred up in your head include being hit by someone else, driving over a bridge, or driving on the freeway. However, you cannot control the uncontrollable. You have no control over someone running into you or a bridge collapsing. Therefore, why worry about something you have no say in?
Instead of putting yourself through the constant worries of driving, why not tackle these problems and put an end to them? Instead of sweating over the thought of driving on the highway, have a friend go in the car with you and drive on the highway a few times a week. This will help you get acquainted with the road so you become used to the thought of driving on the highway.
The only reason you have a fear of driving is because you have built up the thoughts in your brain. The key is eliminating these thoughts, thinking rationally, and tackling your fear head-on.
